Development of Design Guideline for Lock-screen and Chat-room on Mobile Smartphones
We have developed two design guidelines for mobile smartphones. 1) Design guidelines for lock screen have been developed based on 200 users in Korea and the Unites States. 2) Design guidelines for chatting room have been developed based on 200 users in Korea and Japan.
1) Lock-Screen Design Guidelines
A lock-screen is an important design area that has high potential to improve user satisfaction in that it is the one that is first and most frequently used by users when using smart devices. Design evaluation factors for home screen and applications of smart devices are systematized, but on the other hand, study focused on lock-screen design is hard to find. The purpose of this study is to provide guidelines for interface design of the lock screen by extracting important factors from users. Through individual interviews with smart phone users in Korea and the United States, 11 design factors-'easy and intuitive', ‘security function’, 'additional function', 'low battery consumption', 'response rate', 'visual attraction', 'sound effect', 'design creativity', 'fun', 'identity' and 'customization' were extracted and statistical analysis was performed based on 5-point Likert scales. This study is academically significant in that it systematizes important design factors of the lock-screen and provides an objectively measurable evaluation tool and practically significant in that it can provide guidelines for practitioners working for related domestic and foreign companies in developing next-generation lock screen for smart devices.
Along with the design guideline development, we conducted a project for developing low-power consumption lock-screen designs that do not exploit the graphics processing unit inside a mobile device which causes large power consumption. The above three interactive lock-screen visuals were completely implemented without any graphics library in order to implement it as a special hardware unit.
2) Chat-Room Design Guidelines
A chat room on mobile instant messenger is a major design field to enhance user satisfaction, for it provides a crucial space for users to conduct one-to-one and multilateral communications in real time through text messages, multimedia file transfers and voice calls, where they spend most of their time, communicating with friends. However studies focused on chat room have hardly been studied. This study aims to extract important factors in the chat room design from various angles and suggest guidelines for its design. After individual interviews with users of mobile instant messenger, we extracted 10 factors: ‘legibility’, ‘less eye fatigue’, ‘diversity of emoticons’, ‘simplicity’, ‘additional features’, ‘blocking’, ‘profile display’, ‘visual attraction’, ‘sound effects’ and ‘fun’. Their importance was measured on a 5-point Likert Scale with 100 users in Korea and Japan respectively for statistical comparison and analysis. This study has academic significance in that it suggests the evaluation framework for objective measurements and practical significance in that it can provide guidelines for practitioners working for related domestic and foreign companies in developing next-generation chat room for mobile instant messengers.
